How Can the Yankees Improve Their Pitching Staff at the Trade Deadline?

Image
Here we are in the dog days of summer and the Yankees find themselves at the bottom of the American League East. Their plan to just roll with a flawed roster that was exposed by the Houston Astros last October has backfired in 2023. They now sit a few games back of the last Wild Card spot in the AL and with the trade deadline upon us, the window of opportunity to improve this disappointing team is closing. Should Brian Cashman strike while he still can? Recently, Hal Steinbrenner reiterated that his goal is still to win a championship every year. Well, if that's actually the case, then Cashman should be extremely busy over the next few days. Back in May, I offered some suggestions to help the struggling offense. All of those options are still available, so let's shift focus to the ice cold pitching staff. Are there any arms out there that can help the Yankees for the stretch run? Starters Despite the rash of injuries that ran through the Yankees' starting rotation to begi...

How Can The Yankees Close The Gap In The American League?

It's time for amateur GM's everywhere to start prescribing a treatment plan for the Yankees' woes. As mentioned here recently , the biggest problem in Yankeeland heading into this offseason is the large gap that still exists between the Yankees and the Houston Astros. That gap exists for two main reasons: (1) for more than twenty years the Yankees have failed miserably to turn homegrown players into everyday major leaguers, and (2) they refuse to spend the money it would take to make up for the first reason, despite being the wealthiest team in baseball. The Yankees aren't a bad team. They're just not good enough to be the top World Series contender that they say they want to be. The glaring holes in the roster are relatively easy to diagnose. However, coming up with a plan to fill those holes from the corner the Yankees have painted themselves into is a different story. Here's my amateur attempt, which has a roughly 0% chance of actually happening. Assumptions ...

The Yankees Are the Most Underwhelming Team in Baseball: Where Do They Go From Here?

Image
Every year the Yankees are expected to be World Series contenders and it's an entirely fair expectation. No other team in baseball can offer a richer tradition, more exciting city atmosphere, or the available resources that the Yankees have in New York. Yet somehow they haven't really been a viable threat to win the World Series since their last championship run in 2009. This has been especially surprising since the 2017 season. That year, the team's new core of young players developed rapidly and surprisingly pushed the eventual champion Houston Astros to a game seven in the ALCS. It was unusual to see the Yankees as underdogs but as a young team on the rise, that was sure to be short-lived. Still, four full seasons have elapsed since that run and it remains the highwater mark for these Yankees. They've been a good team - winning at least 100 games in both 2018 and 2019 - but have done nothing to separate themselves from other good teams come October. So what's ma...
